The Moose River consists of several runnable whitewater sections.
Highlighted are the Lower and the Bottom Moose. The Moose River is located
south east of Old Forge, New York. Moose River Road is about ten miles
south east of Old Forge on Route 28.
The Lower Section is a long (10 - 12 miles) class III-IV
run at river levels between 3.0 and 4.3. Below 3.0 the river becomes very
scrapey. Levels above 5.0 increase the difficulty dramatically. Between
rapids you will find stretches of slower moving water. There are six named
rapids with several smaller non-named fun spots in between the major
drops. Take out for the Lower Moose is above the Fowlersville Falls
Bridge, take out on river right. This is also the put-in for the Bottom
Moose.
The Bottom Moose is far more challenging than the Lower. The
run is between class IV and class V, depending on the water level, the
higher the level, the pushier the river gets and the more skill you need
to negotiate the river. It holds in store for you nine great
drops, starting off with a long slide down a 60 degree rock slope at Fowlersville Falls, and ending with Crystal, a technical and impressive
drop.
The USGS McKeever
Gauge on the Moose River will give you current river levels.
Each October the AWA
hosts the Moose River Festival. This weekend includes an extreme race
down Bottom Moose and a Sprint down the Lower section. Indoor
activities are scheduled for Saturday Night in Old Forge. This is fun
for kayakers and non paddlers alike.
